Top Two Tips of the week from a Top Toronto Wedding Photographer – Get Maternity Photos

The wedding is over and you are celebrating marital bliss. Life is great. Everything is just perfect peachy pie. And ta da!!! You’re pregnant!

Well, it’s not as straight forward as that, but sometimes it is. So now your life is filled with questions about how things will be different and what you need to do and buy for your little one, or ones if you’re double lucky. My recommendation. Take it slow. There are 9 months to get ready and even when the little one shows up they won’t know that you don’t have everything in perfect order. You need to take time to enjoy those moments with you partner. Keep doing what you do, go for walks, bike rides, movies, but add in one special thing. A maternity photo session, and not just the ultrasound. Your first baby, or even your second is such a special time it’s important to document it as you’ll likely regret not having photos to share with your child of what Mommy looked like when she was pregnant. Maternity sessions can be as simple or complicated as you would like. I recommend simple you’ll want to be able to have the energy to do all that you want to do. These photos should be special moments between you and your partner. I like to take these photos outside around sunset with beautiful natural light. If the baby’s room is set up, I also like to take a few in the nursery and all the tiny little things that your love bump will enjoy, be it story books, socks, or toys.

This shoot was extra special for me as it was Dad to be is my good friend from high school Tim and his beautiful wife Whelena.

Top Two Tips of the week from a Top Toronto Wedding Photographer – Top Toronto Wedding Venues

Congratulations!!! You’re engaged!! Now what’s next? Choosing the venue! There are so many choices. Church, Temple, Golf Club, Art Gallery, the beach?

Here’s a few of my favourite venues.

1. Hart House
7 Hart House Cir. (at Queen’s Park Cres.), 416-946-7196 http://harthouse.ca/weddings/

The entire University of Toronto campus is pretty spectacular. You have modern and classic architecture side by side and gardens galore. Hart House’s architecture is gothic and stunning. It doesn’t get much better than getting married in a castle if that was your dream as a little girl or boy. I can attest to the food being out of this world as I would frequently eat at the Great Hall many moons ago as a student of the University. This location can hold up to 250 people and has all wood flooring, perfect for dancing. Get married here and then walk around the grounds for some of the best photos you can imagine.

2. The Berkeley Church

315 Queen St. E. (at Berkeley St.), 416-361-9666 http://www.berkeleyevents.com/

Is it hard for you to choose what you want for your wedding venue? Well The Berkeley Church has it all – it’s a church, it’s an outdoor venue, and it’s an indoor venue. All three venues are beautiful and have a modern and romantic feel to them. Go to their website to see all the photos and options this place has to offer.

3.  Soooooo…. I couldn’t really decide what art gallery to recommend because I’m pretty torn between the AGO and the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Why so tough? Well, the Group of Seven of course. These two galleries house my favourite Canadian artists and I couldn’t imagine a more spectacular place to get married.

The AGO

317 Dundas St. W. (at McCaul St.), 416-979-6634 http://www.ago.net/venue-rental

Recently renovated this building has touches of Frank Gehry’s mastery. A tower that looks out onto the city, a swirling staircase and a long hall that feels like the inside of ship. Within the galleries are so many of the Thomson collection of art you really need multiple trips to see it all before being oversaturated. Art from all over the world are in the salons and there is even a space where children can interact and create their own.

McMichael Canadian Art Collection

10365 Islington Ave., Kleinburg, 905-893-1121, ext. 2536  http://mcmichael.com/about/facilities.cfm

Not only can you have outdoors and indoors at this venue, you can have it all with the most Canadian of themes. First Nation art as well as hundreds of Group of Seven works are housed here. There is in house catering and accomadates all food requests.

4. Steamwhistle Brewery

The Roundhouse 255 Bremner Blvd. 416 362 2337 http://www.steamwhistle.ca/events/roomsAndRates.php

If you like fun and modern weddings, it doesn’t get much better than this. Steamwhistle is one of Ontario if not Canada’s most well known boutique brewing company. This placed kicked off micro brews in the province and hundreds of breweries have sprung up and followed suit. The venue is the Roundhouse that has high ceilings, rap around windows, and Steamwhistle on tap. It has a rustic and modern feel and could be decorated any way you desire.

5. The Rectory Cafe

102 Lakeshore Ave., Ward’s Island, 416-203-2152 http://therectorycafe.com/

My final recommendation is The Rectory Cafe. This little gem is in a unique location in Toronto. It’s on the Islands!! Ward’s Island to be precise. How fabulous would it be to married on one of the most relaxing and fun places the city has with the backdrop of downtown. The venue is fairly inexpensive to rent and can accommodate about 150 people. What a romantic location that ends with a ferry ride.

Charles Krug Winery Wedding- Elizabeth and Jordan – from a top san francisco candid documentary wedding photographer

I just had to photograph Elizabeth and Jordan’s wedding in St Helena, CA for Bruce Forrester Photography , as an associate as they are one of my favourite studios in San Francisco, but also,  Charles Krug is such an exquisite venue!!!

Elizabeth looked absolutely stunning in her floor length, strapless, form fitting and full chiffon dress. Her hair was elegantly pulled up into a delicate chignon and she wore dazzling diamond earrings to offset her do.  Jordan was decked out  in a dark gray suit with a pink button down paisley blue bow tie. Suspenders, Allen Edmonds shoes, a paisley blue pocket square and Jordan was looking sharp.

Elizabeth and Jordan had their first look under a beautiful magnolia tree, and then walked about the grounds before the Ketubah signing and their splendid mid afternoon ceremony. Their lovely and traditional Jewish wedding was held on the lawn near the small redwood grove backed by estate vineyards. Their guests were invited to sit any where around the non traditional circular shaped seating plan so they could view Elizabeth and Jordan from any seat. It was a fantastic idea and I’m sure Joannie Liss their phenomenal wedding planner had something to do with it.

With the intricately designed Ketubah, Jordan and Elizabeth’s marriage contract, and the Kiddush cup nearby, the couple received Sheva Brachot, the seven blessings for the bride and groom from the Rabbi under a Chuppah, the bridal canopy made of trees. The ceremony ended with a jubilant Breaking of the Glass, the final ritual said to ward off evil spirits.  The guests yelled “Mazel Tov!” and headed in to the Carriage House to dance the night away on a floor finished in old-growth redwood.

The tables were superbly decorated and the dinner menu included some delectable Charles Krug wines. But guests didn’t stay seated long as no Jewish wedding is complete without the Hora, or chair dance. A few strong and brave guests hoisted the bride and groom high above the crowd on chairs on the dance floor and celebrated their wonderful union to the melodic sounds of “Hava Nagila”. You could tell that Elizabeth and Jordan had strong faith in family and friends as the elevated couple managed to barely look down and remained cheerfully glued to their seats.

Many, many Congratulations to you Elizabeth and Jordan!! You are such a delightful couple with a fantastic journey ahead of you. I wish the best to you both!!

Crocker Art Museum Sacramento Wedding – Remona and Gary – from a top san francisco candid documentary wedding photographer

Remona and Gary’s wedding at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento is probably my favourite wedding of the year. I know, I know, I know, you’re not supposed to say that. But it just was. Perhaps, there will be more weddings this year that I will call my favourite, but for now, this is it. Ok, well, there’s also the fact that the museum loved my photos, and have them on their website. That’s was pretty gosh exciting.

There are so many things about their wedding that I just absolutely loved. First of all, Remona and Gary are just the sweetest, cutest, most adorable couple. They are so kind and caring towards each other, I just am so happy for them. Their whole day went off without a hitch thanks to their wedding planner Katherine Noller-Fernandez of Custom Celebrations. When I met with Remona and Gary months previous and I was hoping they would have a planner.  I was so glad that Katherine was there for them. She really made sure that the day went according to the timeline. The whole team was pretty spectacular, from the florals done by Ellen Kim of Ginger Leaf Floral, to the actual museum itself staffed by Phoebe. There were so many wonderful spots to photograph Remona and Gary I just couldn’t stop taking pictures of them. They got ready at the Citizen Hotel where Remona had her two bridesmaids and Gary had his two Groomsmen. The men were ready and off to the Capitol Building for some fun photos. They had their first encounter in front of the museum, then had some time inside for portraits before their ceremony in the ballroom and then their reception in Friedman Court. If you are ever in Sacramento and are looking for a day to bliss out on art, I highly recommend this museum. The collections it holds are magnificent.

Congratulations Remona and Gary!! I wish you the utmost joy and happiness in your lives together. Thank you for having me as your photographer and much love to you both.
